1933

10th December

London, England

Today was a fruitful day. I was worried this morning, as the Nobel Prizes were later today and I didn’t think my submission would make it even into the shortlist, but I was wronged. After arriving and finding my seat, I was notified that I would be a contender for the physics award by a passing committee member. I was gleeful at the passing to the shortlist, and looking forward to telling my colleagues.

Finally the moment came, and the tension in the room went up like a balloon of helium in the stratosphere.  The winners for the literature award and the mathematics award were announced and then the physics award was about to be announced, my chance. I could see the faces of scientist rising in a fake hope. I knew that feeling, I was feeling it too. "And the winner is... Erwin Schrodinger and Paul Dirac for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory!". I didn't even realize, in fact I started clapping. "Congratulations to the happy soul who got it" I thought. "Pity I didn’t catch their name." It was only when I saw my gawping colleagues faces in shock turn to me I stood up and walked to the stage. I was astounded, surely my poor equation for wave forms couldn't of won the most prestigious award of the sciences.

At home Annemarie Bertel, my wonderful wife, was intrigued to find the winner, she hadn't picked up the newspaper, she wanted to hear it from me, the darling. When I told her the news she too, was astounded. we danced around the living room with no care in the world, because this is surely the best day of our lives.

Paul Dirac

Paul Dirac won the 1933 Noble Prize for Physics with Erwin Schrodinger.
